Justin Smith was given extra time to ponder his decision regarding retirement; the decision remains the same. Smith will retire following a 14-year career spent with, both, the San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals.

Following the surplus of exits on the 49ers’ defense, that included linebackers Chris Borland and Patrick Willis, Smith is the latest to join the two in retirement. Although it was not as unexpected as the other two, due to Willis’ prime and Borland’s age, it followed the trend of a deteriorating defense for the 49ers.

Smith has had a lasting stay with the 49ers, making eight Pro Bowl appearances. Consistency could define Smith’s career, as he has only missed three games in his 14-year career. Teams, such as the Bengals and 49ers, could rely on Smith to provide his presence on the field each week.

Smith’s statistics are no duds either. He recorded 87 sacks, three interceptions, and 17 forced fumbles, providing the opposing quarterback with havoc on, practically, each snap.

The 49ers have wished Smith good wishes, as he has provided the organization with the consistent effort each week.

“Justin is the consummate professional whose impact on this organization can never be measured by statistics alone,” said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke. “His durability, competitiveness, work ethic, strength and rare stamina helped set him apart over his 14-year career. Cowboy will go down as one of the best to ever wear a 49ers uniform and his candidness, work ethic and pure passion for the game will be missed. We wish the very best for him and his family!”

In addition to the following statement, Smith did not decided to hold a press conference due to one specific reason.
