Devon Still Cut by the Cincinnati Bengals

Unfortunate news came to Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Devon Still today, as the Bengals informed that he had been cut from the team’s 53 man roster.

Last season, Still had 19 total tackles and did not register a sack.

Though Still’s statistics back up the Bengals’ decision to cut him, many are criticizing the Bengals on a moral standpoint based on what Still has gone through with his daughter and her cancer.

While Still was never a star player by any standards, his daughter Leah Still defeated cancer this past year and even got her own Wheaties cereal box cover. Also, Leah and Devon both received the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs, an award named after the late Jim Valvano.

Valvano was the head coach of North Carolina State University’s basketball team and won the 1983 NCAA Basketball Tournament against long odds. Unfortunately, Valvano died in 1993 of metastatic cancer at the age of 47. The Jimmy V Perseverance Award was created in 2007 with people like Stuart Scott, Eric LeGrand, and George Karl receiving the award.

Although Still was cut, since he was on the Bengals roster last season, he and his family have five years of NFL health insurance, whether he plays in the league or not.

While Still may have been cut, his career is not over. Many teams could use a player like Still on their roster, and it is likely that a team will sign Still if injury hits one of their defensive tackles.
