Quarterback Josh Freeman has officially been released by the Miami Dolphins before training camp begins.

Freeman signed with Miami in April with the intentions of being a reserve to current quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

If he was kept on the roster, odds are that we wouldn’t have seen him on the field, as Tannehill would start and Matt Moore would be the backup. Freeman would fall to third string, thus being a reserve.

Freeman was drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He would prove to be a steady, reliable quarterback in his first few years until he began struggling in 2013. His job was already up in the air and it was after a week three matchup against the Patriots that the Buccaneers put rookie Mike Glennon in charge of the quarterback duties. Freeman was not voted a captain and even missed the team photo that year. He was released by the team that October.

Three days after his release, Freeman was signed by the Minnesota Vikings. He wouldn’t start, as there was already a quarterback battle going on between Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder. He was however given the strart against the Giants week seven. The game was hard to watch as Freeman didn’t throw a touchdown and the Vikings lost in a poor performance. He wouldn’t start another game for Minnesota.

He later served a brief stint on the Giants for about a month during the 2014 offseason. He was waived that May. Freeman would go on to miss the 2014 season entirely, not on any roster.

Freeman is only 27 and still has a lot of years left in his career. He will begin to search for a new home, where he hopefully can resurrect his rocky career.
