The New York Mets have placed right-hander Jacob deGrom on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a right rotator cuff injury. Rafael Montero will be called up to take over deGrom’s rotation spot starting Tuesday against the Washington Nationals.

Called up in the middle of the year, deGrom burst onto the scene and has not looked back. He is 6-5 with a 2.87 ERA and a 8.4 K/9 rate. Although he will be placed on the disabled list, the injury is good news to the Mets. The injury is not severe, as the rookie will likely miss just two starts and return when eligible.

“He’ll need some anti-inflammatories, but it looks like it will be a 15-day type of deal,” assistant general manager John Ricco told the New York Daily News. “That’s good news on Jake.”

Montero struggled when he was called to the majors back in May when Jenrry Mejia was sent to the bullpen. In just 20 innings, he is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. Coincidentally, Montero lost his rotation spot to deGrom – who was in the majors at the same time covering for the injured Dillon Gee.
