The Washington Redskins are reported to likely pick up quarterback Robert Griffin III’s fifth-year contract. News was first reported from NFL.com’s Albert Breer via. Twitter:

The decision to pick up the option will require the Redskins to pay the quarterback $16.1 million in 2016. Griffin currently holds a base salary, from his rookie deal, of $3.2 million; in addition, Griffin’s contract has a signing bonus of $3.4 million, making the cap hit $6.7 million.

Griffin, part of the 2012 draft class, has been under plenty of scrutiny for several years in Washington. Initially, Griffin was supposed to become the franchise quarterback for the Redskins and their organization, but due to mishaps and injuries, the progress has been slowed.

In similar situations, 2012 quarterback draftees Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson are expected to receive an immense contract extension from their respected franchise. Their situation have panned out in preferable fashion; Wilson even capping his two Super Bowl appearances, winning one.

In terms of the Redskins picking up Griffin’s option, this may hint towards the Redskins sticking with their quarterback, but viewers around the league can not assume. Breer also reported via. Twitter that Redskins general managerĀ Scot McCloughan has stated that they organization could still possible go with a quarterback with the number five pick in this year’s draft.

If the Redskins were to take a quarterback in this year’s draft it would certainly create a media buzz around the league. In addition to the media buzz, there would certainly be quarterback competition during training camps and early in the season. The Redskins already have a loaded depth chart when it comes to the quarterback position; Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy are in the shadows of Griffin, looking for the starting job.
