A majority of brackets had a likely 5-12 upset of last year’s Cinderella Stephen F Austin over the Utah Utes. The Utah Utes of the west coast proved their doubters wrong, and bested the Lumberjacks by a score of 57-50 behind 18 points on a perfect 7-7 shooting and 11 rebounds from freshman seven-footer Jakob Poeltl. They don’t care if they spoiled your bracket, they’re moving on to the Round of 32.

Utah owned the edge in a majority of key team stats. Shooting 47% from the floor to SF Austin’s 33%, they also won the free throw battle 16-21 to SFA’s 11-13. Even though they turned the ball over 17 times, they blocked seven Lumberjack shots. It was a close game throughout; Utah simply had the edge and was able to pull away in the end.

Utah’s next test will come against the 4th seeded Georgetown Hoyas. That game will be played on Saturday.
