Detroit Tigers’ David Price Heading To Toronto Blue Jays

Just a day before the MLB trade deadline, the Detroit Tigers traded five-time All-Star David Price to the Toronto Blue Jays for Daniel Norris, Jairo Labourt, and Matt Boyd. The Blue Jays will take on the rest of David Price’s salary, which expires this offseason where he will hit the free agent market.

Through 26 starts for Detroit, Price is 9-4 with a 2.53 ERA and 138 strikeouts in 146 innings. Price has been the ace of the Tigers starting rotation since the team acquired him from Tampa Bay Rays in a trade deadline deal last season. He has been everything Detroit wanted, but with the team struggling down the stretch, the team had no option but to trade away expiring contracts.

Toronto will be getting one of the best pitchers in the league; the team needs it going all-in in the Wild Card race. The offense of the team is really good with the remaining problem being the pitching. The team needed that one ace which they now have Price. The pitching staff is ranked 23 in ERA. It will most likely be a rental player, since Price will be heading to the free agency market once the season is over. He will be getting close to $200 million dollars, as the market is set very high for pitchers of that caliber

Detroit is obviously going in a direction of a rebuild now, since the team is most likely out of the playoff picture in the Wild Card and AL Central. The team got a very good pitching prospect in Norris and some other prospects that could help in the farm system. Norris was a top-20 prospect entering the year but has struggled in the minors. The left-hander is 3-10 with a 4.27 ERA.

Coming off a big trade earlier this week, getting Troy Tulowitzki from the Colorado Rockies, Toronto is getting the team ready for a big playoff run. Tulowitzki brings some more offensive firepower while Price is a big-time starter. It will be a matter of time before we find out if these trades will get them into the playoffs for the first time in 20 years.
