San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence will miss approximately six to eight weeks due to a non-displaced fracture in his left forearm.

The incident occurred during Thursday’s spring training game against the Chicago Cubs. Pence was hit by a pitch thrown by Cubs prospect Corey Black in the sixth inning. Further x-rays confirmed what many believed already, an extensive absence.

Pence was a key component to the Giants’ success in 2014, the championship winning season. According to Baseball-Reference, in 2014 Pence hit .277 in addition to 76 RBIs and 20 home runs.

Giants’ manager Brandon Bochy reassured the media that his replacement will be, “[the] same guys we’re throwing out there, we’re not going change anything….”

With the departure of third baseman Pablo Sandoval, the Giants are not in a situation in which they can withstand an injury as severe as this, possibly more. Pence’s return is scheduled to be around mid-to-late April.
