The Houston Texans have announced that they have successfully re-signed former Arkansas Razorbacks’ quarterback Ryan Mallet to a two-year $7 million contract. Mallet, a 2011 third-round draft pick, spent the first three seasons of his career with the New England Patriots learning behind arguably the best quarterback of all time, Tom Brady.

When you spend years improving behind a legend, there are high hopes that you will become a starter quality quarterback in the league. That’s certainly what the Texans have been hoping for. Houston was able to acquire Mallet in a trade with New England last November, in hopes that he could take over Ryan Fitzpatrick’s starting role. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to injury.

There will be an intriguing starting-quarterback battle coming in Houston’s training camp. Ryan Fitzpatrick is unlikely to return to the Texans, because Houston is reportedly on the verge of acquiring former Cleveland Brown Brian Hoyer. Add in second year prospect Todd Savage, and the Texans are gonna have themselves a three-way battle to determine their starting quarterback for next season.
