Jim Tomsula Named 49ers Next Head Coach

At least eight candidates interviewed, 17 days of searching and one day after defensive coordinator Vic Fangio threatened to leave the organization if he wasn’t named the coach, the San Francisco 49ers decided to stay in house. But to Fangio’s surprise it wasnt him, it was defensive line coach Jim Tomsula.

Tomsula’s hiring can be an indicator that the 49ers are trying to uphold the team chemistry that has given them great success over the years. Tomsula will be promoted to head coach from defensive line where he spent eight years at that position. While defensive line coach, the 3-4 defensive formation has thrived under him.

He will now be appointed with the task of bringing the team back to the league’s elite, as they missed the playoffs for the first time in four years under former coach Jim Harbaugh, who was let go on December 28th after an 8-8 season.

The biggest task ahead is getting the 49ers offense to improve from a lackluster season where they were ranked 20th in the NFL in total yards and 25th in points scored. Cam Inman reports that a league source has informed him that Vic Fangio is not expected to remain as the team’s defensive coordinator.

The two candidates rumored to fill the two coordinator positions are Chicago’s former head coach Marc Trestman at OC and the Raiders DC Jason Tarver his respective permission.
