Sir’Dominic Pointer, a 6’6″ 195 lb small forward from St. Johns’ University, has got the best name in the business. The senior is also a wonderful basketball player, one that has fallen under many people’s radar. Pointer brings a lot to the table on the hardwood, both offensively and defensively. He’s posting averages of 13.6 points on a Big East-best 53.6 percent from the field, 7.6 rebounds, an impressive 2.6 blocks and 2.0 steals per game on the defensive end. To dig deeper in, Sir’Dominic has a Player Efficiency Rating of 25.6, and posts total win shares of 4.7 and defensive win shares of 2.7 (both lead the Big East).

Now, there’s many ways you can dissect different qualities of a college prospect. However, a simple way to get a point across is to post the game logs for Pointer’s last 13 games.

So what does this tell us? It tells us that Sir’Dominic has consistent scoring ability at an efficient rate. That he can aggressively pull in a high number of rebounds at a consistent rate, and even if he has an off-night on offense, he can still come back and put up monstrous defensive numbers. Games with eight blocks for a guy who’s 6’6″? Very impressive. Pointer is also a decent free throw shooter, currently at 73 percent from the charity stripe.

Unfortunately, every player has weaknesses. Pointer has one very crucial one, he is almost non-existent as a three-point shooter. He does not have great numbers from beyond the arc at all, currently shooting five percent from three this year. Another concern for Pointer is figuring out what position he will play once he’s off to the NBA. He’s currently listed as a small forward, but plays basically as an undersized four at St. John’s. He will likely enter the draft as a SF, though he would still be undersized for the position. The best fit for his size would be two-guard, but that would require him to develop a jump shot, which he does not effectively have.

Sir’Dominic Pointer is a great prospect with a lot of upside. There are questions about him which may lead to some doubt, but this is a guy that could end up surprising a lot of people once he gets to the pro level.
