Recent rumors have floated around claiming that the Steelers do not envision safety, Troy Polamalu, in their 2015 plan. This news may come as a surprise to many, but signs of decline have been evident in regards to the highly respected safety.

Polamalu has spent his entire 12-year career in Pittsburgh; leaving his footprint on not only the franchise, but the city of Pittsburgh as well. The eight-time Pro Bowler has been regarded as one of best safeties in the history of the game.

Evidently, and as stated previously, there have been signs of decline in the safety’s play. Polamalu played in 12 games during the 2014 season and had not recorded an interception. In addition, he forced only one fumble; a talent that has driven his career of hard knocks. In comparison, which may or may not be fair, Polamalu’s career high season statistics include 91 combined tackles, seven interceptions, and five forced fumbles. It does not seem that Polamalu remains the player he once was, perhaps due to age approaching 34.

Disregard statistics, you still have an incredible football player, as well as a presence in the Steelers’ locker room. The leadership quality Polamalu has provided to the organization has been a key component for the franchise, both on-and-off the field. If Polamalu were to retire, or continue his playing time with another franchise, the Steelers will have to replace, not only his physical contributions, but also the leadership Polamalu had provided.

If Polamalu were to be released and was contingent on proceeding with his football career, there may be a few teams that may keep their tabs on him due to the lack of talent in the free agent class. Teams such as the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Indianapolis Colts come to mind immediately. Not only will these teams fill their void at the safety position, but leadership as well, as Polamalu has provided.

Whether or not Polamalu remains with the Steelers, or intends to prolong his career with a separate franchise, he has left his mark in the football world for the better. It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out.
