The Phoenix Suns have signed center Tyson Chandler to a four-year deal, 52 million dollar deal.

Chandler will take over the starting center position, as he will serve as a mentor for Alex Len, the fifth overall pick in 2013. Len still has room to improve and having a dominant defensive big man like Chandler working by his side will be a huge factor in his growth. Len’s skill set is similar to Chandler’s, making them a perfect mentor-apprentice combination.

The Suns entered free agency with lots of talent in their backcourt but lots of question marks in the front court. Len and Markieff Morris are talented, but Chandler is a sure thing. There’s something to be said for certainty, and Chandler brings that in the form of his elite shot blocking.

The Suns recently signed Brandon Knight and adding Chandler is another step towards the playoffs. The team has a meeting set up with highly-coveted free agent LaMarcus Aldridge, the last piece to the playoff puzzle. Chandler will be in attendance, trying to recruit him to Phoenix.

The 14-year veteran has been on five teams, Phoenix being his sixth. Last year, Chandler averaged 10.3 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. He shot 66.6 percent from the field, the second highest in his career.

Chandler is a double-double machine and a defensive fiend. He won the Defensive Player of the Year award back in 2012 and was named to the All-Defensive First Team the following year. Chandler’s presence should help the Suns as they try to creep into the Western Conference playoff picture.
