The Cleveland Cavaliers have reached an agreement that will keep their all-star power forward in town for five more years. Love, who was an unrestricted free agent, announced his decision on the Players Tribune. The deal is said to be worth $110 million over the next five seasons. In the past few days, it was expected that Love would remain in Cleveland, but throughout the regular season and playoffs, it was very much up in the air.

When Love came to Cleveland to form a big three with Kyrie Irving and Lebron James, not many people knew what to expect. Would Love be featured in the offense and produce as usual, or would he take a lesser role and see his numbers reduced? The latter turned out to be true as Love posted his worst rebounding numbers since his rookie season, as well as his lowest scoring numbers since his second season. Love was far from the same person who once averaged 26 points and 13 rebounds per game. Now, he did average 16 points and 10 rebounds per game, which is not bad at all, it’s just not the Kevin Love that everyone has grown accustomed to. Kevin Love only played full three games in the Cavaliers playoff run before his shoulder was separated by Kelly Olynyk of the Boston Celtics. In those three games he averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game.

The Cavaliers performed admirably in the playoffs without Kevin Love, putting up a huge fight in the NBA finals against the Golden State Warriors. This begged the question of whether or not Love would be back. Especially since Tristan Thompson took in and performed very well, averaging 10 points and 11 rebounds per game throughout the playoffs. However, in the end it seems as if the Cavaliers wanted more than just offensive rebounding from their power forward. Kevin Love’s scoring ability will always be there even if it’s not being utilized fully, and the Cavaliers are very aware of that. However, they also seem very intent on resigning Tristan Thompson to a long term deal worth lots of money, so it’s unclear as to what their plan is. Perhaps Thompson and Love will start side by side and Mozgov will be pushed onto the bench. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how Love’s presence will impact the Cavaliers next season. Maybe an increased chemistry with his teammates will take him and his team to the next level. It will be an interesting story to look out for as the Cavaliers look to make a title run once again.
