The Memphis Grizzlies’ chances to be a top-four seed in the Western Conference may have come to a sudden halt, as they found out today that center Marc Gasol is out for the rest of the season after undergoing foot surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot.

Gasol will finish the year with 16.6 points, seven rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game, with all stats being a fairly significant drop off from last year’s averages of 17.4 points to go along with almost eight rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game.

The Grizzlies are currently sitting with the fifth best record in the Western Conference with a record of 32-23, and are only 4.5 games ahead of the eighth seeded Houston Rockets.

In the 2013/14 season, the Grizzlies went 10-13 in the 23 games Gasol missed with an MCL injury. While that record may make Grizzlies fans fearful for their playoff hopes, this year’s Grizzlies are much more different than the 2013/14 team, and are far deeper.

That improved depth should help Memphis stay afloat for the rest of the season and carry them to another playoff berth in the tough Western Conference.
