The beginning of a possible downfall for the Oklahoma City Thunder may have just began with the firing of head coach Scott Brooks after a disappointing season for the Thunder. The decision was seen to be more and more likely to happen as the team struggled throughout the season. Brooks reached three Western Conference Championships and one NBA Finals appearance during his stay with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

After a 45-37 season, with no playoff birth for the Thunder, the franchise seems to be heading in the wrong direction in terms of the future. Russell Westbrook had a breakout season, but he has the option to opt-out of his contract and test free agency this summer. Kevin Durant’s contract ends after next season; there is a possibility that Durant takes his talents back home to Washington D.C. That could possibly lead to the Thunder trading Durant before his contract is up.

Brooks was not considered a great x’s and o’s coach and relied heavily on Westbrook and Durant to do all the heavy lifting throughout the years. Even if the Thunder lose Durant and Westbrook or both, there’s still enough talent on that roster for a good head coach to blend into a good team. None of this is guaranteed, however, the Thunder may wind up keeping everybody and it’ll all be great in the end for the organization. This is something that can go very great or very wrong for the Thunder depending on how the front office handles this situation.
