The Sacramento Kings began a series of questionable moves to begin the 2015-16 season after unloading former eighth overall pick Nik Stauskas, a first rounder, and two big men to the Philadelphia 76ers to clear cap space for potential free agent signings. Just a few days later, the team has shipped point guard Ray McCallum to the San Antonio Spurs for a second round pick.

Though he was listed as the team’s third-stringer, McCallum had a solid two years in Sacramento, showing flashes of potential as a floor general. In the 2014 season, McCallum put up 7.4 points and 2.8 assists per game in just 21 minutes. Though his game is raw and still needs work, a second round pick is undervaluing the 24-year-old.

As for the Spurs, the team has had a busy offseason in which they picked up All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge and veteran big man David West in free agency. They topped off their championship caliber team by re-signing Manu Ginobili, Danny Green, and Kawhi Leonard, all huge factors in the team’s 2014 NBA Championship win.

McCallum will join a crowded, yet talented backcourt of Tony Parker, Patty Mills, Ginobili, and Green. Though he may not see minutes in the near future as he is still a third-stringer, Parker and Ginobili are on the cusp of retirement, securing a spot as the backup point on a reputable and prestigious San Antonio team.

The Detroit-product will learn a lot under arguably the best coach of all time in Gregg Popovich and veteran point guard Tony Parker, possibly becoming a low-end starter or solid bench player in the latter part of his career.

Meanwhile, the Kings will hope to find another hidden gem with this future second rounder, as they have had their fair share of success in the past. McCallum was the 36 overall pick in 2013 while Isaiah Thomas was the last pick in 2011.
