The Brooklyn Nets have gotten to work on building the future of their franchise by resigning their two starting front court players. Thaddeus Young has reportedly agreed to a four-year contract with $50 million.

Young is coming off of a good season in which he averaged 14 points and five rebounds per game. Those numbers aren’t great, but he was also somewhat limited in minutes last season. In Philadelphia, Young showed what he was able to do when he was given lots of chances to score.

During Young’s last season in Philly, he averaged 17.9 points per game. If he produce in the same way that he did while he was in Philly, then the Nets have made a good deal. Young is a very athletic power forward that is 6’8″. He has the size of a small forward but the skill set of a power forward.

This has it’s benefits and it’s problems. Young is quicker than many opponents that he matches up against, but he’s also very undersized. If Young could add some dribble moves in to his arsenal, he could spend much more time at small forward. If he had the versatility to switch back and forth between the forward positions, it could do wonders for the Nets offense.

In his 28 games with the Nets last season, Young shot 38 percentĀ from behind the arc. This shows a solid first step in the diversification of Young’s skill set. Considering the money that Brooklyn has now put into him, you can expect that they will try to use him as much as possible. A newfound versatility would give the Nets lots of flexibility when game planning for other team’s lineups.

Now that Brooklyn has resigned Young and Brook Lopez, they will most likely look to revamp their aging backcourt in the coming offseasons. Young and Lopez will provide solid building blocks from which the rest of the Nets’ team can be sculpted in the future.
