The Chicago White Sox have added yet another player this offseason, signing outfielder Melky Cabrera to a three-year, $42 million dollar deal.

Cabrera had a solid performance last year with the Toronto Blue Jays, batting .301 with 16 home runs, 35 doubles, and 81 runs scored in 139 games. He will become Chicago’s starting left fielder in 2015. He will be a huge bonus to the White Sox lineup, replacing Dayan Viciedo in left field.

The White Sox have been very busy this offseason, trying to quicken up the rebuilding process. Last Tuesday, they traded the Oakland Athletics for right-hander Jeff Samardzija. During free agency, they also added closer David Robertson, power hitting first baseman Adam LaRoche, and left-hander Zach Duke.

Cabrera has had a roller-coaster of a career. He began his career with the Yankees, playing solid but struggling to hit for power. All of a sudden, he broke out in 2011, batting .305 with 18 home runs and 44 doubles. The following year in San Francisco, he batted .346 with 11 home runs and 25 doubles in 42 less games. He even made his first All-Star appearance and ironically won the All-Star game MVP. However, his dominant season was cut short after being busted for PEDs and suspended for 50 games.

Since then, Cabrera has been a consistent hitter, as in 2012 and 2013 he batted .279 and .301 respectively. He will get on-base often and will definitely make an impact playing alongside a solid Chicago lineup. Only time will tell how the new and improved White Sox will do, but the future seems very bright for Chicago.
