Amar’e Stoudemire has announced that he will sign with the Miami Heat on a veteran’s minimum, one year, $1.5 million deal.

Stoudemire was drafted back in the first round of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Phoneix Suns, and became the first ever player to win the Rookie of the Year award after being drafted out of high school. He went on to be named an All Star six times in his thirteen seasons.

Currently, Stoudemire is entering his 14th season, as he previously played eight seasons for the Phoenix Suns, four seasons for the New York Knicks, and most recently, one season for the Dallas Mavericks.

Last season, he was waived by the Knicks in February, and two days later, signed a one year deal with the Mavericks. He would prove to be a solid bench player, averaging 11 points and four rebounds during his tenure.

Heat president Pat Riley released this statement on Friday:

“We are very fortunate that a proven All-Star like Amar’e has chosen the Miami Heat, he is going to bring gravitas, leadership and a hardworking mentality to our team as we look to win another Championship in Miami.”

In other Miami news, they have officially signed Dwyane Wade to his $20 million contract. Wade had another great season a year ago, averaging 22 points and five assists. His knee problem resurfaced, causing him to only participate in 62 games out of the 82 game season.

The signing of Stoudemire will help the Heat add depth behind rising star Hassan Whiteside, and will provide veteran leadership to a young, talented Heat team.
