Oklahoma City point guard Russell Westbrook has won the scoring title for the first time in his career; the MVP candidate tallied a very impressive 28.1 points per game (PPG) this season. Russell put up 36 points during the win over the Timberwolves on Wednesday to beat his old teammate James Harden of the Rockets by only .7 points.

Even with Westbrook’s 36 point effort against the Timberwolves, the Thunder’s season will come to a close. They did all they could have done Wednesday, but since the Spurs lost to the Pelicans, the Pelicans will take the final spot in the Western Conference. When Westbrook was asked about how he felt about his scoring title, he responded with

“S—, It doesn’t mean nothing. Good job. Hooray. I’m at home. Watching other teams play. Doesn’t mean nothing.”

Westbrook’s Thunder came up just short of playoff berth, and he did everything he could to get them to the playoffs. Even though they finished a game short, Westbrook’s impressive play was recognized as he put together 11 triple-doubles this year and is a MVP candidate.

Westbrook carried the injury prone Oklahoma City Thunder through the season due to reigning MVP Kevin Durant only playing 27 games this season. Durant’s injury was key, as Durant led the Thunder to the number 2 seed in the West last season, and now that they didn’t make the playoffs, his importance to the team is stronger than ever. His health issues clearly affected the team, and put the team on Westbrook’s shoulders. His injury may have led to Westbrook’s incredible stats this year.

Westbrook did win the scoring title, but he has made it clear that a NBA championship is a bigger priority to him.
